The Gradient Mesh Tool – Adobe Illustrator CS5: Learn by Video [Video]

As part of our celebrations of 10 years of plug-ins for Adobe Illustrator, Astute Graphics are pleased to announce the release of DirectPrefs. This means that your vector artworks will appear in browsers which support HTML5. With the help of this application you can create some animation and interactive graphics on the basis of web applications.

As you know the free plug-in designed by a talented Ukrainian developer and a friend of mine — Yemz. Mesh Tormentor allows you to make manual and tedious work with the Gradient Mesh automated, extending the standard features of Adobe Illustrator. Download it and enjoy yourself!

These tools speed up your workflow by helping you in both every day simple tasks to more complex and precise ones. Next update of Mesh Tormentor plugin for Adobe Illustrator.

I have great news for everyone who uses Gradient Mesh in their artworks. There is the next update of Mesh Tormentor plugin version 0. This plugin has earned praise of illustrators from over the world. Today I’m inviting you to participate in beta testing of these updates. I have good news for the owners on Mac OS. I invite everyone who wishes. This guide is written and illustrated by YemZ, the author of the plug-in.

All those who have tried to work with Gradient Mesh know how hard it can be to learn this technique. A lot of people quit after having failed to get acceptable results. Anyway, it is a very hard work and advice will not work here. Only practice, personal strategy, and many, many hours of manual work will lead to success. I’ve always regretted that there are no tools in Adobe Illustrator that can automate and streamline manual operations. Now it is not like that!

YemZ, talented designer from my country, has developed Mesh Tormentor plugin, which will surprise you with its functions. What a creation are the Art Brushes of Mesh objects. Let’s see what it does and where it can be used when applied. Free Registration! Forgot your password? Subscribe Now! Recent Consultations.

Edit the color stops For each color stop, you can perform the following: To change the color of the color stop, double-click the color stop to make several color options appear in a panel, or select the color stop and click the Fill color in the Properties panel. To remove a color stop, either press Backspace or Delete, or drag the color stop outside the bounds of the selected artwork.

To add a new color stop, click within the bounds of the selected artwork. To move a color stop, press and drag a color stop. Create gradient lines Aside from adding color using color stops, you can also draw a line that you can blend the same or different colors along. In the Properties panel, select the Lines option. Click in the selected artwork to set a point and begin drawing the line.

Click in another spot to draw a curved line. As the two versions are very similar to one another, the steps within this tutorial can be applied to both. You may do this by either creating a shape with the shape tool. Next, you will have to set the number of rows and columns you want within the object.

At every end and intersection of the grid lines, you will see that the grid has anchor points. Once you do that, the Connector Points with Bezier handles will appear. This will allow you to adjust the contour of the grid lines in any way that you want. Once you have checked that, click on any of the grid points within the object. To add more colors to the object, you can continue selecting different grid points and apply different colors to them.

However, one thing that you must remember is that you should be careful not to click on a path where there is no grid point. Doing this will instead create another grid line to your object. If that is not what you want, avoid doing this. The selected object is converted to a mesh object that takes the shape of the gradient, either circular radial or rectangular linear. You can edit a mesh object by adding, deleting, and moving mesh points; changing the color of mesh points and mesh patches; and converting the mesh object back to a regular object.

To add a mesh point, select the Mesh tool and select a fill color for the new mesh points. Then click anywhere in the mesh object. To move a mesh point, drag it with the Mesh tool or Direct Selection tool. Shift-drag a mesh point with the Mesh tool to keep the mesh point on a mesh line.

This is a convenient way to move a mesh point along a curved mesh line without distorting the mesh line. To change the color of a mesh point or patch, Select the mesh object, and then drag a color from the Color panel or Swatches panel onto the point or patch.

Or, deselect all objects and select a fill color. Then select the mesh object and use the Eyedropper tool to apply the fill color to mesh points or patches. You can set transparency and opacity values within gradient meshes. Transparency and opacity values can be assigned to individual mesh nodes. For textures, designer Evgeniya Righini-Brand recommends the mesh tool. Click here to download the source file.

Selected light in front B. Move selected light to back or front button C. New light button D. Delete light button. Open the Bevels. With the path selected, click the New Symbol button in the Symbols panel or click New Symbol from the panel menu. To rename the symbol, double-click the symbol in the Symbols panel, enter a name in the Symbol Options dialog box, and click OK.

The existing file in the original destination is replaced. Every 3D object is composed of multiple surfaces. For example, an extruded square becomes a cube that is made of six surfaces: the front and back faces, and the four side faces.

You can map 2D artwork to each surface on a 3D object. For example, you might want to map a label or text onto a bottle-shaped object or simply add different textures to each side of an object. Symbol artwork B. Symbol artwork C. A and B mapped to 3D object. Symbols can be any Illustrator art object, including paths, compound paths, text, raster images, mesh objects, and groups of objects.

Because the Map Art feature uses symbols for mapping, you can edit a symbol instance and then automatically update all surfaces that are mapped with it. You can interact with the symbol in the Map Art dialog box with normal bounding box controls to move, scale, or rotate the object. The 3D effect remembers each mapped surface on an object as a number. If you edit the 3D object or apply the same effect to a new object, there may be fewer or more sides than the original.

If there are fewer surfaces than the number of surfaces defined for the original mapping, the extra artwork will be ignored. A light gray color mark appears on the surfaces that are currently visible. When a surface is selected in the dialog box, the selected surface is outlined in red in the document window.

To move the symbol, position the pointer inside the bounding box and drag; to scale, drag a side or corner handle; to rotate, drag outside and near a bounding box handle. To make the mapped artwork fit to the boundaries of the selected surface, click Scale To Fit. To remove artwork from a single surface, select the surface using the Surface options, and then either click None from the Symbol menu or click Clear.

To show only the artwork map, not the geometry of a 3D object, select Invisible Geometry. This is useful when you want to use the 3D mapping feature as a three-dimensional warping tool. For example, you could use this option to map text to the side of an extruded wavy line, so that the text appears warped as if on a flag.
